Palm Pixi to Get Video and Voice Recording Soon? |

One of the biggest things missing from WebOS is video and voice recording capability. It seems like a glaring hole since PalmOS had the ability and that was years ago. Well the good news is that there's nothing preventing the Palm Pre from recording video... nothing other than Palm getting around to make it available. While some, like myself, are content to wait for that day, others are willing to push the envelope. WebOS Internals have put together a video recorder called Precorder.
WebOS Internals were quick to notice that version 1.3.1 of WebOS brought updates to the GStreamer libraries that make the camera in WebOS go. Precorder is still alpha and it's only at version 0.3. For those that need it spelled out, at this stage installation of it isn't for the faint of heart.
Originally, I didn't expect this to work for the Pixi since it is a different piece of camera hardware. However, the beauty of abstraction is that these libraries seem to be updated for both the Pre and the Pixi. So it stands to reason that as soon as either this solution matures or Palm comes out with an official one, Palm Pixi users will be to take advantage of new functionality.
This underscores part of the power of the new WebOS. In previous years Palm would promise that their Treo's could work with a wifi SD card, it was just a matter of someone to write the drivers. Well no one ever could and Palm didn't fill the void - which left many people, myself specifically, without functionality that they thought they'd get with their phone. It seems like as long as Palm releases the hooks to the WebOS people will take it and extend it in numerous directions.
